Expenditure V3 was already the best-in-class algorithm for goal-driven diet programming, and in this update the algorithm’s performance was slightly enhanced across the board.

An Expenditure Modifier is an optional add-on to the algorithm that enables you to eke out extra performance in specific scenarios. Try out MacroFactor’s two new Expenditure Modifiers by enabling them from the More Menu under “Expenditure” in Feature Settings.

  • Step-Informed Updates: Uses step trends to speed up expenditure updates during periods where the step data improves confidence.
    • We do NOT attempt to directly assign an expenditure value to your steps or activity.
  • Predictive Goal Adjustment: Applies a predictive adjustment to expenditure based on the likely impact of goal changes.
    • As a predictive modifier, we’re necessarily getting ahead of the data here, so one should expect less than ideal results if they set a goal they don’t intend to pursue.

You can now import recipes from the “Create Recipe” workflow!

MacroFactor supports popular machine readable recipe formats that many recipe websites use. If a website does not use a standard format, MacroFactor AI will make a best effort to parse out the recipe, so you can import from more places.

Recipe importer

In addition, the design of the recipe wizard has been updated with a brand new look and the following features:

  • You can now customize recipe icons
  • You can now add URLs to recipes to remember where you found them
  • You can now toggle between Recipe and Serving when viewing the macro and micronutrient nutrition summary
  • You can now re-order steps and manage them more easily
  • You can now re-order the foods within a recipe

Additionally, we’ve updated the behavior for the “Total Weight” field based on user feedback. Automatically populating the raw ingredient weight was often misleading because it does not account for changes during cooking, like water evaporation. We still calculate the sum of ingredient weights for you and display it so you can use it as a reference for salads and uncooked dishes,  but we leave the non-required Total Weight field blank.

You can now test drive the MacroFactor AI and log your foods simply by snapping a photo.

MacroFactor AI is currently in Open Beta and will remain in Beta while we improve its accuracy and refine related workflows. Once the Beta release is fully rolled out, we will make a separate announcement with details about the new features, pro tips, and practical examples.

Our near-term goal is that MacroFactor AI will:

  • Save veteran users time by automating the bulk search process for complex dishes.
  • Perform better than an untrained human, removing barriers to entry for those who are new to food logging.
  • Bridge the experiential gap for those who live in regions where food and/or branded product data is not as readily available.
  • Prioritize high-quality, micronutrient-rich entries to give you a more complete picture of your nutrition.

Our long term goal is that MacroFactor AI will be an ecosystem of utilities that will nearly eliminate food logging effort for even the most experienced MFer, without compromising on results, transparency, or end-user control.

Key areas of focus:

  • MacroFactor AI does not blindly rely on LLMs to generate food entries. We prioritize real, lab-analyzed results with complete nutrition data. MacroFactor AI will only generate a food entry when it is necessary or otherwise optimal, and its generation will be grounded in real life results.
  • MacroFactor AI will do its best to group foods logically, using recipes and single foods, instead of giving you a single opaque result.
  • Because we build each result from individual food entries, our output is inspectable.
  • The plate is a fully featured interface for interacting with the AI result. AI is not perfect and can make mistakes, and we give you the control to edit and modify its results.

How it works:

  • From the food logger, select the AI tab.
  • Snap a photo and optionally add a meal description.
  • MacroFactor AI will search our database and populate your Plate with the results.
  • Inspect and manually adjust ingredient quantities before logging.

Beyond photo logging: This feature is a first step towards a smarter, AI-powered MacroFactor. We have an exciting AI roadmap ahead!

Customizable Dashboard, Step Tracking, and More

We hope you woke up in a crafty mood! It’s time to customize your Dashboards, and decide if our new features will make your Dashboard cut. Amidst the new features are: Step Tracking, Comparison for Body Metrics and Temporal Aggregation for all of your favorite charts. Let’s dig in.

Dashboard Customization

Once you update to release 4.0.0, scroll down to your Dashboard and tap “Customize Dashboard” to build your own Dashboard.

  • Dashboard Hat: The top of your Dashboard, known as the Hat, can focus on Weekly Nutrition, Daily Nutrition, and your Energy Balance. You can re-order these insights or toggle them off to remove any you don’t need. If you’d prefer a streamlined view with direct access to your data, you can turn off all insights and remove the Hat entirely from your Dashboard.
  • Add or Remove Tiles: Any Dashboard tile can be toggled on or off. For example, you can now pin as many nutrients as you like or select specific Body Metrics for quick access right from the Dashboard.
  • Arrange Tiles: Dashboard tiles can be reordered within their sections. For instance, if you want to prioritize your Waist measurement, simply move the Waist tile to the top of the Body Metrics section.
  • Prioritize Sections: The Dashboard is organized into five main sections: Insights & Analytics, Habits, Nutrition, Body Metrics, and General. You can customize the order in which these sections appear. For example, if you want to see your Fiber and Water intake first thing when you open the app, you can prioritize the Nutrition section and make sure you arrange for Fiber and Water to be at the top of the Nutrition Section.

New Dashboard Layout

Our goal was to preserve the look and feel of the MacroFactor dashboard, while giving you more power over your data and applying better organizational principles to lay the foundation for future features.

  • Inner Dashboards: You now have not just one Dashboard, but five. Each content section that is not fully represented on the main Dashboard gets its own Inner Dashboard. Any insights not pinned to your main Dashboard will appear in their respective Inner Dashboards. For instance, if you display only Calories and Protein on the main Dashboard, you can still access Carbs and Fat by tapping “See All” next to the Nutrition section heading.
  • Body Metrics. Body metrics are now their own Dashboard Section. Each metric has a dedicated tile where you can view and edit data specific to that metric, like Waist measurements, from its individual page. This makes Body Metrics more powerful and easier to navigate.
  • Nutrition. You can now pin as many macro and micronutrients as you like. Like Body Metrics, Nutrition has its own Dashboard section.
  • Habits. Habits are now more economical in space, with both – weight logging and food tracking habits prominently displayed side by side. Data types that did not belong under the Habits section (such as Body Metrics, Period Tracking) were moved out into their own respective sections.
  • General. We are introducing a new section type, which currently houses Step and Period Tracking data. In the future, we will expand data that can be monitored from MacroFactor based on Feature Requests to our Public Roadmap.

New Landmarks

  • Step Tracking: Track your steps directly in MacroFactor by syncing with Health Connect or Apple Health. This feature gives you a comprehensive view of your activity in one place.
  • Energy Balance: Previously limited to a 30-day view, the new Energy Balance insight allows you to compare intake to expenditure over any time interval.

New in Charts

  • Aggregation: MacroFactor charts display weight, body measurements, and nutrition data for any given day. Now, you can view data in aggregate, making it easier to identify weekly or monthly trends, especially for macro and micronutrient intake. Choose between Daily, Weekly and Monthly aggregation.

New in Body Metrics

  • Comparison Tool: Easily compare tape measurements from any two days. In Body Metrics, navigate to the new Full Body tile and tap “Compare All Metrics” to view changes over time.
  • Full Body Metrics in One Place: While you have the breakout views for all body metrics, you can now also view all metrics for any given day from the dedicated Full Body Dashboard tile.
  • Progress Photos: Progress Photos are now separate from tape measurements. You can pin the Progress Photo tile to your Dashboard and easily access the Before & After tool and Photo Gallery from the dedicated Progress Photo page.

New in Nutrition

  • Nutrition Data Manager: At the bottom of the Dashboard, you’ll find the Nutrition Data Manager, a dedicated space for reviewing and editing your integration data or manual entries for Calories, Protein, Carbs, and Fat. It’s also where you can quickly see days marked as Fasting or Incomplete.
  • Macros Tile: The Nutrition page now centers on your macro data. With Calories isolated as their own tile and intake-expenditure comparisons available in the Energy Balance tile, the Nutrition page provides a focused view of your daily macro intake.
  • Customization: For every nutrient, you can choose to display % Toward Target, Consumed or Remaining on the Dashboard nutrient tile.

Expenditure V3 is here
  • The new algorithm is more responsive to meaningful changes in your expenditure while being more stable when faced with transient fluctuations in weight.
  • Users who experience large temporary shifts in weight during different phases of their menstrual cycle should see a marked improvement in algorithm’s performance. This improvement won’t require period tracking to apply.
  • Expenditure V3 is more resilient to missing data, requiring only 3 days of consistent tracking to unpause after a period of inactivity. It performs better, even when it has less data.
  • Expenditure V3 handles goal changes more gracefully.

There’s more

  • We have updated our bulking recommendations in accordance with our recent review of literature on muscle gain. You can expect an article covering this topic soon.

We are excited to introduce the blueprint for the evolution of MacroFactor’s diet coaching.

As you know, the Check-In is a foundational component of MacroFactor’s diet coaching system. During the Check-In, MacroFactor makes any necessary updates to your calorie and macro targets based on past weeks of weight and nutrition data – ensuring that your dietary targets are aligned with your stated goals and unique metabolism.

In Version 3.0.0, the weekly Check-In becomes a truly thoughtful and dynamic experience, driven by the intelligent MF Coach. The new Check-In will consist of curated Coaching Modules that help resolve diet challenges you may be facing and optimize your diet through further personalization.

The MF Coach

  • The Check-In will now consist of Coaching Modules.
  • Each Coaching Module addresses a specific problem domain. It may anticipate a question, provide targeted guidance, or make key changes to your data or program with your approval.
  • Coaching Modules are thoughtfully curated for each particular user and each particular check-in. The MF Coach determines which modules appear based on your unique habits and progress.
  • Some modules will be mainstays at most check-ins, while others will only surface for specific situations.
  • Version 3.0.0 includes MacroFactor’s first six modules. This first batch of modules focuses on reviewing the week’s nutrition and weight logging data, allowing you to provide context that will lead to more accurate coaching recommendations.
  • You may see new coaching modules appear during your Weekly Check-in as soon as next week.

Coaching modules are designed to be meaningfully impactful and minimally disruptive. Many food loggers on the market have been utilizing invasive marketing questionnaires masquerading as personalization, and those questionnaires seldom lead to any meaningful changes to the user’s experience. The MF Coach stands counter to this trend and instead curates the check-in experience, only presenting new information when it may be helpful along your journey and only asking questions when answers can meaningfully impact the trajectory of your goal. With this in mind, we have added customization options to give you more control over the coaching experience.

Settings

  • If you are a skilled MacroFactor operator, a proud MF’er, and a prodigy of speed itself, you may wish to opt-out of the MF Coach experience in favor of the quick, one-tap Check-In you have today. To do so, go to More > Strategy > Fast Check-In and turn on the Fast Check-In. Fast Check-In skips past all Coaching Modules and jumps straight to updated macro recommendations.
  • As we add more and more Coaching Modules, you might find some more useful than others. You can control which Coaching Modules the MF Coach will consider for each Check-In by toggling individual Coaching Modules on and off from More > Strategy

What’s next?

With the coaching module framework now built into MacroFactor’s check-in system, our team plans to begin releasing new modules regularly, ensuring fresh experiences and added value for MF’ers. The first six modules are a starting point, and a promise of what’s to come.

Community Note: The release will gradually roll out to Android and iOS devices. It will take 1-7 days for the update to make it to everyone. After 1 day, any iOS user should be able to manually initiate the update from the App Store.
